Letter: Why the lack of candidates?

By Greg Flakus, Vancouver

We filled out our mail-in ballots for the primary election but were sad to see that for the very important position of county councilor in District 2 there were only two candidates to choose from. This is also true of many of the other races this year. I was trying to come up with a reason for this.

Is it too difficult anymore to raise the funds to challenge an incumbent? Is the current system a burden for new candidates? Is the time required to campaign and go before the public too burdensome? Has being a politician become a very negative profession in light of our current times?

We need to be cautious or very soon we may see most incumbents with no challengers. That would be very sad.
