Letter: Republicans in power waste money

For the last 19 months, the Republican-controlled Congress has failed to perform its Constitution-mandated responsibility to prevent the president and his Cabinet from frivolously spending our hard-earned taxpayer dollars. Perhaps the Republican leaders in Congress are so wealthy that they no longer follow what parents teach their children about prioritizing expenses and managing a budget.

Examples of excessive spending include: $3.6 million for each presidential trip to Mar-a-Lago, over $1 million for airfare by the Treasury secretary during March-October 2017, $31,000 for a dining set by the Housing and Urban Development secretary, and many well-documented financial missteps by the former Environmental Protection Agency director and Health and Human Services secretary. By October 2017, Trump had spent 50 percent more for golf, security, and vacation expenses than President Obama spent during his entire eight years in office.

We can change the current situation by voting for Democrats to the U.S. House and Senate to regain the majority control. We need to restrict the current administration and Congress from seeing our taxpayer dollars as a bottomless pocketbook.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
