Letter: Pay teachers what they’re worth

I graduated from high school in Clark County and I remember how hard my teachers worked. How they graded our papers and brought in articles for us to read and mentored us outside of class.

As I got older and discovered what it took to be a teacher, both through their education and once they had been hired, I became a taxpayer concerned that the people who help raise and educate our community weren’t being paid a living wage. I’ve gotten to know teachers who hold two, sometimes three, jobs to make ends meet. I’ve seen those same teachers choose their students over and over again. As someone who pays into the tax money that goes to pay these teachers, I want to see them paid well. Our school board members need to appropriately evaluate their budgets and pay our teachers at the level at which they deserve to be paid.

As parent of a new kindergartner asking “When is my first day?,” I am hopeful that a solution is reached soon.
