La Center football preview: For the Wildcats, Coach and QB are also father and son

To repeat or not to repeat? Preview of the re-vamped La Center Wildcats.

John Lambert has seen just about everything his in two decades of coaching high school football. But this season, he’s tasked with a new challenge.

How does a dad coach his son?

La Center will field a team with many unproven players after losing 23 seniors, the most Lambert has ever had at once, from last year’s squad that made the 1A state semifinals for the second consecutive year. It was a team talented enough for Lambert to dub it the “best team we’ve ever had at La Center.”

One of the players stepping in to fill the void is sophomore quarterback Tom Lambert, coach’s son. John Lambert asked other coaches who have done it, and he’s come away with a impression that, in those situations, kids are harder on themselves than coach/dad is on them.

But is he worried? Hardly.

“They observe so much information through osmosis in meetings, as a water boy, hanging around with the team over the years,” John Lambert said of his son. “He has high expectations on himself.”

Tom Lambert has been playing quarterback for years, and has worked with John Charles of AirOne Academy, who provides specialized quarterback training.

In Lambert the quarterback, La Center — with its long-installed wing-T offense — sees the opportunity to throw the ball perhaps more than last year.

Plus, coach Lambert hangs his hat on the program’s ability to rebound after a string of graduations. After his four biggest groups of seniors — 2001, 2004, 2008 and 2013 — departed, the Wildcats won a league title the following year, and have won or shared the Trico League title seven of the past eight seasons.

That statistic will be tested this season as La Center replaces a line that had eight seniors last season. But its the line that will have the most experience of any position group with mostly juniors and seniors.

And despite replacing essentially everyone except for returning Trico League offensive player of the year Wyatt Dodson at running back and second team all-league selection Collin Namanny on the line (the only returning two-way starters), Lambert touts a talented crop of players from last year’s team that, due to depth, simply weren’t able to play as much.

In John Lambert’s words: “They had to wait their turn.”

As for his quarterback, the head coach said he’s reached out to several coaches who have a son playing arguably the most demanding position in sports, namely Montesano coach Terry Jensen, whose Bulldogs won the 2014 1A state title with his son, Matthew Jensen, under center.

The best advice?

“Enjoy the moment,” Lambert recalled, “it goes fast.”

— Wildcats have won or shared 7 of last eight league titles

— Last season was program’s deepest postseason run

2017 season: 10-3, 4-0 1A Trico. Reached state semifinals.
