On the issue of arming teachers, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, states, “This isn’t going to be something I’ll be working to pass in Congress” (“Leaders weigh in on guns for teachers,” Aug. 26, The Columbian). Admirable perhaps, but important things remain unsaid. Like the good Republican back-bencher she has been, in service of the Trump agenda, she would be likely to vote for this measure anyway. If she really doesn’t want more guns in schools, she should state clearly that she wouldn’t vote for this.
