RIO DE JANEIRO — The Brazilian government may limit the access of Venezuelans to Brazil, President Michel Temer said Wednesday, as it decides how to tackle the migrant crisis in its northern border region.

He told Radio Jornal a ticketing system could be used on the border to limit those who cross into Brazil to 100-200 per day, rather than the current figure of 700-800.

The idea had been discussed at government meetings on Tuesday he said, adding “What’s happening in Venezuela is unacceptable. It’s disrupting the harmony of the entire continent.”

The government later qualified Temer’s remarks, saying that any ticketing system would be used to prioritize those needing humanitarian attention and was not to be confused with the closure of Brazilian borders to Venezuelans.

On Tuesday, Temer had announced that the army would be deployed to the border town of Pacaraima, after locals last week attacked Venezuelan migrants forcing them to flee back over the border.

In Brazil, arrivals have been concentrated in the state of Roraima, where Pacaraima is located.
