Letter: Make others cut emissions

Climate change is obviously real, and should everyone’s priority. But I believe the focus on how to solve this problem is missing two key elements. First, 86 percent of the emissions that cause warming comes from outside the U.S. Look up air pollution in China. When you see the pictures, you won’t be so concerned about using your gas lawn mower. China produces more than 30 percent of world emissions, but I never see any news about what they are doing to clean our air. Why not?

Second, people cause global warming. So how can a political party that wants to make laws cutting our emissions also want open borders allowing anybody to come into our country? And to even give them sanctuary? What hypocrisy. If the 10 million to 15 million people who are here illegally were to go back to their own country, that would reduce our emissions substantially. How can our state meet targeted emission reductions if our population keeps increasing, somewhat due to people coming here illegally?

Unless others start working on reducing emissions, the state of Washington could stop all our emissions and make almost no difference in reducing climate change. We’re all affected by this issue, but if we’re bailing out a sinking boat, while others are drilling holes in it, we’re wasting our time.
