Letter: End U.S. military action in Yemen

Kudos to Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell for voting to end U.S. involvement in the civil war in Yemen, while also condemning the Saudi crown prince for the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Neither the Senate nor House has ever used the 1973 War Powers Act to demand the end of military action by U.S. forces, and this action is long overdue. One relief organization has estimated that over 80,000 children have died of starvation due to the effects of this conflict, while more than 3 million refugees have been created.

Special recognition goes to the seven Republican senators led by Mike Lee of Utah for joining in the passage of this resolution. Our representative, Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, supports continued U.S. involvement in this war as evidenced by her vote on the bill that included provisions to table any action on a Yemen resolution this year. Write your congresswoman and urge her to reverse her stance when this comes before Congress again in 2019.
