Letter: Put taxes on single-use plastics

By Bruce Jensen, Vancouver
Published: December 22, 2018, 6:00am

We must deal with the plastics pollution crisis at the source of the problem. If a ban on the production of single-use plastics is not possible, then we need to add taxes and tolls on nonessential single-use plastics.

The argument that this would hurt the poor is bogus. How often have you seen the poor buying coffee in single-cup plastic dispensers, plastic tableware, plastic single-use condiment containers, plastic water bottles, plastic straws, plastic beverage containers and all the other plastic single-use throwaway items? Most people will not buy single-use items simply for convenience if it costs too much. Any money raised can be dedicated towards the cleanup of the current plastics mess.

I urge you to bring pressure on our government to take strong action against the source of our plastics pollution crisis.
