SureID to settle class-action layoff lawsuit for $350,000

HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Hillsboro, Ore., company formerly known as SureID has agreed to pay $350,000 to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging it failed to give employees adequate notice when it laid them off last year.

SureID, now Fortior, laid off 400 people last year after losing a contract to provide identification verification technology to the U.S. Navy.

That contract accounted for 70 percent of SureID’s revenue, and its loss left the Hillsboro company in disarray. The company subsequently replaced its top management, sold a portion of its business, changed its name to Fortior and used Chapter 11 bankruptcy to discharge most of its debt.

The settlement applies to 248 workers at SureID’s Hillsboro headquarters laid off from May through August last year.
