Letter: Don’t ease up on license scofflaws

The Jan. 29 Columbian story “License scofflaws could get lower fine” dealt with a proposal to deal with people failing or choosing to not register their vehicle in the state. State Sens. Lynda Wilson, R-Vancouver, and Ann Rivers, R-La Center, would show leniency by dismissing the $1,000 fine if the scofflaws pay a $500 fine and come into compliance within 90 days. Wilson says that part of the problem is that law enforcement is reluctant to write people such costly tickets.

Balderdash! Law enforcement should step up and do the job they are getting paid for — $1,000 fine for the first offense, $500 and 500 hours of community service for the second.

Why should law-abiding citizens carry the load for cheats? The Clark County Council should reconsider and not support the measure.
