PORTLAND — Police are investigating the death of a man in Fernhill Park in Northeast Portland after receiving a report of gunfire shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday.

The man was lying on the ground in the park at 6010 N.E. 37th Ave., police said in a news release.

Homicide detectives and criminalists with the department’s forensic evidence division responded to the scene, said bureau spokesman Sgt. Chris Burley.

He said the investigation is in its early stages, and the man’s cause of death is still unclear. And the park’s dark, muddy conditions are making things difficult, he said.

“Investigators want to get out there, they want to continue what officers have already started, which was canvass the park, canvass the area, look for potential evidence,” he said, “and then also contact any neighbors that might have any information that could help us find out what occurred tonight and who is responsible for what occurred tonight.”

Officers will also be reviewing 911 tapes and interviewing those who called 911, Burley said.

He encouraged anyone who lives in the area who saw anything or has surveillance cameras that may have captured any vehicles or people coming or going from the area to contact police.

Investigators ask anyone with information about the death to contact them at 503-823-0479.
