Vancouver Mall — The Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington honored five girls from Girl Scout Troop 12340 in Vancouver with a Silver Award, the second highest award for service to the community given by the organization.

The Silver Award requires a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer time in the community.

The girls, Dominique Phelps, Samantha McHarg, Katherine Thornton, Dinora Aloso and Naomi Aloso, recruited Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts to assist in two projects. They taught the younger members how to make friendship bracelets, and sew bags and dolls to give to children at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

“We are pleased that our girls challenged themselves to discover a community need, develop a plan and take action to impact our community,” Troop Leader Susan Thornton said in a release.

Troop 12340 is comprised of 10 girls between the ages of 12 and 17.
