Washougal — Students in Jemtegaard Middle School’s Club 8 art program painted a mural at Lower Hathaway Park.

The mural was sponsored by the city’s parks department, and was two years in the making. In a release from the district, Suzanne Grover, the city’s parks and cemetery manager, said the project started when a group of Clark College students offered to paint a mural after writing a thesis on how murals deter vandalism.

The city suggested putting the mural on the equipment shed, so the students came up with a baseball theme for their design. They ran out of time and only painted the shed a single color, and the project sat incomplete for about two years.

Club 8 leader and Jemtegaard teacher Dani Allen took up finishing the project this spring.
