TACOMA — An off-duty Tacoma police officer working security at a grocery store shot a pit bull that allegedly tried to bite him.

The News Tribune reports the officer was working Wednesday he saw a man allegedly casing a parked car for items to steal.

Charging documents say the officer told him to leave but the man returned and the officer confronted him and a second man. Charging documents say the second man took a pit bull out of his car when the officer asked for ID.

Documents say the officer fired at the dog after the man let go of the leash and the dog charged at the officer, biting at his leg.

The dog was taken by animal control and is expected to survive.

The man was arraigned Thursday on assault charges.

The officer and man charged were not identified.
