Letter: Put Proud Boys in timeout

Thank you for raising awareness of the disruption caused by a small group of boys called Proud Boys in the July 14 article by The Seattle Times (“Proud Boys raising profile in Northwest,” The Columbian). These boys are acting out in our local communities without any accountability and testing our local laws on how far they can get away with their actions. Clearly they intended to cause harm to a young African-American male.

The other accountability needed is with our own Clark County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and Vancouver Mall security. Prosecutors must pursue investigating this band of boys to the fullest extent possible. In addition, the Vancouver Mall security guards shamefully concluded that the young African-American male was the problem and placed him in handcuffs, even a woman who tried to help the young male. Either Vancouver Mall security guards need anti-bias training or they need to be fired.

The Proud Boys can have their disgusting opinions, but when they start acting out on their hate then we have some serious problems. If they go unchecked, their actions will escalate each time. Time to put these boys in timeout.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
