Community notebook: Carne fastest at local marathon

David Carne of Powell Butte, Ore., won the marathon race at Sunday’s Vancouver America Marathon & Half event that finished in downtown Vancouver.

Carne’s time was 3 hours, 4 minutes and 59 seconds.

It was a close finish for second and third places. Kevin Dean was second in 3:09:14, and Carrie Supinski was third in 3:09:19. Both are from Portland.

The top Clark County finisher was Ashley McKinstry of Camas, placing 10th overall in 3:46:35. Heather McFadden of Camas was 12th in 3:51:46.

There were 51 runners in the marathon.

Shun Yamaguchi won the half marathon with a time of 1:26:25. David Ames of Vancouver was second in 1:29:17, and Kestutis Zalpys of Vancouver was third in 1:35:14.

Charmion Freifeld of Bend, Ore., was the top female finisher in the half marathon with a time of 1:36:31. She was sixth overall out of 141 runners.

Registration for the 2019 event is open with early-bird rates of $84 for the marathon and $64 for the half marathon through July 8.

AppleTree Marathon coming in September

Miss out on Sunday’s local marathon? Then start preparing for the inaugural AppleTree Marathon, happening in and around the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site on Sept. 16.

Current registration fees are $110 for the marathon or $80 for the half marathon. There is also a 5K Sunset Run on Sept. 15 with a current entry fee of $45 for adults and $20 for kids. Prices go up $5 on July 31.

Vancouver Victory halt 2-game losing streak

The Vancouver Victory broke a 1-1 halftime tie with five second half goals to beat the Spokane Shadow 6-3 on Sunday at Harmony Sports Complex in an Evergreen Premier League soccer match.

Brandon Zambrano had three goals for Vancouver (2-2-0), and Tyler Fox scored, and the Victory also received an own goal.

Vancouver’s next game is 3 p.m. Sunday against Tri-Cities Alliance at Harmony Sports Complex. Admission is $6.

USTA Mother-Daughter doubles event at CGM

Club Green Meadows is the site for the USTA National Mother-Daughter Doubles tournament on June 29 and is open to all USTA members. Entries close on June 15.

There are three divisions including a senior division.
