In a mailed promotional piece, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, proudly announced that she was able to support the new tax bill because it increases the take-home pay of working citizens. Of course it does! She dodges the real question: “Who is paying for the tax cut?” House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, said, “The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will add $1.5 trillion to the debt, before accounting for interest or possible gimmicks.” Your children, and generations to come, will pay for the tax cut that she’s so proud of.
In 2011, Herrera Beutler co-sponsored a constitutional amendment that would have required the federal government to balance its budget every year.
Wow. Talk about a change in platforms and political spin. Are we now supposed to think that going further into debt to give ourselves a tax cut, which future generations will pay for, is a wonderful idea that she can proudly support? And, of course, she doesn’t even mention the tax-cut benefits to corporations, the real beneficiaries.
