Letter: Bennetts still part of Vancouver

By Chelle Bennett, Vancouver
Published: June 6, 2018, 6:00am

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sale and closing of Bennett Paper and Supply in Vancouver. Our family wants to give a heartfelt thanks to our loyal customers and the community for the best of 76 years.

They say every business has a life span, and after 76 years in Vancouver, we merged with Walter E. Nelson Co. on June 1. It will be business as usual going forward, using the same phone numbers and email. All records have been shifted over to the new location. We’re focusing on a smooth transition.

There’s been speculation as to what will happen next. I’d like to dispel any rumors. Our family maintains ownership of the Bennett Paper building. We have plans on the table for new use of our location. Uptown Vancouver is revitalizing and we intend to participate.

The Bennett family has had a business presence in Vancouver for more than 100 years starting with our beloved grandfather, Guy Bennett, who owned Bennett Hardware. In 1942, our dad, Jim Bennett, started Bennett Paper and Supply in the basement of Bennett Hardware. In 1947, Guy Bennett built our building at 16th and Washington streets.

Keep an eye out for changes. We’re looking forward to being part of the rejuvenation of Uptown Vancouver.
