SPOKANE — A state medical board has determined that 14 autopsies “met the standard of care” following a probe into the cases handled by two Washington medical examiners.
The Spokesman-Review reports the Washington Department of Health launched an investigation last year after several families questioned the findings of Spokane County medical examiners following a string of autopsies with death causes found to be accidental or undetermined.
The Washington Medical Commission had hired an outside expert to review the cases. The board discussed the review in a closed meeting last week.
Commission Deputy Executive Director Micah Matthews released the findings Tuesday, stating the commission closed the investigations.
Medical examiners Dr. Sally Aiken and Dr. John Howard did not return the newspaper’s calls Tuesday seeking comment on the state investigation’s findings.
