Letter: Arming teachers is a win-win

The March 7 letter “Proposal goes against human nature” gave us a view of the working brain of today’s liberal public school teacher. To wit, “Only very rarely will a rational person put his life at additional risk … ” (to save another). Really? I could introduce you to over 2 million law enforcement officers and U.S. Marines willing to do so on a daily basis and that’s the tip of the iceberg when also considering our Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard personnel. Also, remember the local American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast we read about each year in The Columbian.

As for “Schoolteachers … are rational … obey their natural impulse … (not to harm) another human,” what a despicable concept when applied to protection of young students. School teachers are charged, amongst other things, with the safety of the children and would react as a parent in protecting the family.

I agree, President Donald Trump was way off base, again, implying that teachers be trained to the level of law enforcement officers. Ridiculous! I propose that teachers properly trained in handling firearms in a school setting be authorized to volunteer to do so. It would be the natural thing to do for self protection, and the right thing to do for duty — a win-win.
