Letter: Trump doesn’t earn respect

By James Olenslager, Vancouver

I have supported every president since I was eligible to vote, no matter their political side or views. Even those I did not vote for. The main reason I supported them was because I respected them.

I’m sorry, but I cannot say the same for our current leader. Using public media, he has alienated all our allies. He has also degraded races, genders, people’s sexual orientation, our military, and our country.

He has given an enormous tax break to the super wealthy (himself included), reduced the EPA and environmental requirements, and reduced our federal protected lands — all to benefit the people to whom he owes allegiance.

He is trying to expand drilling in these lands as well as in our ocean waters off our coasts, which would have a detrimental impact on our environment and our way of life.

He has personally created tension between North Korea and Russia that has not been equaled since the Cuban missile crisis.

How can anyone who loves our country support a president who had not earned our respect?

We may not be able to put him out of office, but we do not have to show the rest of the world that he has our respect and support.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
