CLACKAMAS, Ore. — Arts-and-crafts retailer Hobby Lobby said Thursday that it will open its first store in the Portland area sometime in May.

The store will occupy the former Sports Authority site at Southeast Sunnyside Road and Southeast 84th Avenue in Clackamas. That chain closed all its stores in 2016.

Based in Oklahoma, the privately held chain made national news four years ago when it won a Supreme Court ruling that found the government cannot compel companies to pay insurance coverage for contraception if those businesses’ owners have religious objections.
