I read that four of Vancouver Public Schools’ high schools will have turf fields installed, paid for by the last bond measure (see fort.vansd.org/new-turf-fields/).
I found this interesting. I supported the bond and encouraged others to, as well. What brought about my desire for it to pass? Quite simply, my son goes to Hough Elementary School, which doesn’t have an adequate playground for the children to play in. I refer to the area that has bark dust as the “swamp.” When it rains the area has such poor drainage that it turns into an area where students have lost their shoes in it and they were not found.
It’s nice that the high schools will get turf fields, but their current fields work, whereas Hough’s doesn’t after a few rainy days. The district suddenly showed disinterest and memory disorder as we were told a new playground would be done soon if the measure passed. The voters in the Hough neighborhood did their part and supported the bond. It seems the school district is hoping that our memories are as bad as theirs.
Believe me, if the promised playground isn’t here this summer, I and other Hough neighborhood voters will have a problem supporting any more bonds for school improvements.
