Prep highlights: Lauderdale’s 18 strikeouts highlight King’s Way win

Sam Lauderdale mowed down nearly every batter in his six innings on the mound.

Lauderdale recorded 18 strikeouts, 17 swinging, while allowing one run on two hits with two walks as King’s Way Christian beat Elma 8-1 in the first round of the 1A district baseball tournament Monday at Castle Rock.

Damon Casetta-Stubbs went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBI, and Riley Danberg and Bryce Dodge also brought in two runs each for the Knights (14-6).

King’s Way advances to face Columbia of White Salmon at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Castle Rock for a berth to state and a place in the district championship game.

Columbia (16-5) beat Hoquiam 6-3 in eight innings.

La Center (12-6) rallied from a 4-1 deficit to beat Tenino 5-4 and advance to the district semifinals. The Wildcats face Montesano, a 10-0 winner over Castle Rock on Monday, at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hoquiam’s Olympic Stadium.
Trailing 4-3 entering the seventh inning Monday, the Wildcats scored four runs, including a two-out, two-RBI single by Beau Castleberry to score Jack Ossenkop and Hayden Williamson. It’s the second walk-off hit for Castleberry in as many games. He also had the game winner in a 4-3 victory over King’s Way last week.

Castleberry and Saige Keep each had two hits for La Center.
District girls golf

Camas’ Hailey Oster fired a 1-over 73 to lead the field by four shots after the first day of the 4A District girls golf tournament at Tri-Mountain Golf
Course.

Oster, a senior, leads the pack of five Camas golfers to occupy the top five spots in the 26-golfer field. Teammate Emma Cox (77) is four shots behind Oster followed by Abigail Jiang (80), Ashley Clark (82) and Lauryn Tsukimura (85).

Twenty-one golfers made the final-round cut. Skyview’s Maddy Starwalt (89) and Maddy McKinney (90) and Union’s Katie Brockley (96) and Cassidy Pettitt (97) round out the top 10.

The final round is Tuesday at Tri-Mountain. Oster, Cox, and Starwalt and McKinney of Skyview make up the final grouping, which tees off at 10:34 a.m.

In the 3A District tournament, also at Tri-Mountain, Prairie’s Delainey Patterson has a three-shot lead on Kelso’s Liz Dolan (80) entering Tuesday’s final round after shooting a 5-over 77 Monday.

Prairie has three golfers in the top 6. Baylee Robertson (81) and Madi Schmidt (95) are third and sixth, respectively. Fort Vancouver’s Kiana Coburn (84) and Mountain View’s Audrey Chang (85) fourth and fifth.
The top 20 out of a 25-golfer field advance to Tuesday’s final round.

Stars of the day

Maleya Burns, Union softball, went 3 for 4 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored in the Titans 12-0 win over Heritage.

Kekai Schultz, Ridgefield softball, went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and drove in five runs in the Spudders’ 11-1 six-inning win over R.A. Long.

Olivia Grey, Woodland softball, struck out 17 batters in a one-hit 7-1 win against Mark Morris.

Faith Grisham, Columbia River girls tennis, won her No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0 agaist Washougal to help the Chieftains win a share of the 2A GSHL title.
