Letter: Social Security is a promise

Catherine Rampell’s opinion column “6 questions you may have about Trump’s economy” (May 3, The Columbian), was very interesting except for one statement she made, “boomers began aging into entitlement eligibility,” referring to Social Security as an entitlement.

When Social Security became law it was a promise — a promise by our government to take the funds we and our employers were required to pay so that when time came for retirement the government would provide a monthly payout.

I was going to write to House Speaker Paul Ryan but he’s quitting and he probably would not care anyhow.
