KENNEWICK — Relatives and friends of a 17-year-old Kennewick skateboarder hit by a car last week are asking others for help.

Eddie Perez has been in a coma at a Spokane hospital since the May 3 crash on West Sixth Avenue.

Christina Marcelina, a member of his church, made a tearful call on Facebook for prayers and help for the family. More than 3,400 people have seen the plea.

“I’ve worked with him during our youth nights and he is very involved in our youth group and our church,” Marcelina said in her video. “He is an awesome kid.”

Police said Eddie was skateboarding and didn’t stop to check traffic along South Rainier Street when he was hit by a car.

Investigators believe the driver couldn’t avoid hitting him, said Kennewick Sgt. Aaron Clem.

Eddie’s parents have been clinging to hope that their son will recover, according to reports.

Eddie’s cousin, Jannette Garcia, created the GoFundMe campaign to help the family with medical and travel expenses. The goal is $100,000.

“The family right now need our help to pay for medical bills, transportation, food, and hotel so they can be with their son,” she said.
