Portland – Sunshine Dairy, a maker and distributor of dairy products around the Vancouver-Portland area for 85 years, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The Portland company announced Thursday that it will restructure the company, including selling a Northeast Portland plant to competitor Alpenrose.

“Given the vast changes currently going on with the consolidation of dairies across the country and the reduction of family owned dairies, we feel this restructuring will enable us to provide for the future benefit of the employees, customers and suppliers,” said Michael Anderson, president and CEO.

Sunshine aims to retain its other plant, also in Northeast Portland, which it says remains profitable. The company also said that Alpenrose has shown interest in hiring employees at the plant to be sold.
