Author will discuss early pioneer Calvin Tibbets

Did you know that Oregon’s earliest white pioneer was a stonemason from Maine?

Vancouver native Jerry Sutherland will visit the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center on Saturday to discuss his 2016 book, “Calvin Tibbets: Oregon’s First Pioneer.” Sutherland and his father, Art, dug into Tibbets research because they mistakenly thought they might be related to the settler, who first came to Oregon in 1832. It turned out not to be the case, but that didn’t matter: “They were having too much fun to stop learning regional history through the eyes of this ubiquitous stonemason from Maine,” says a statement from the author.

Sutherland will give a free talk, and sign and sell copies of his book from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 1501 E. Evergreen Blvd., Vancouver.
