The American Stroke Association is recognizing PeaceHealth Southwest for its diagnoses and treatments of stroke patients.

Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States and, according to the national organization, PeaceHealth has showed quantifiable improvements in treating and diagnosing it. Those improvements are according to guidelines set by the ASA.

Eric E. Smith, an organization within the ASA and an association professor of neurology at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, said the guidelines have been shown to be effective in treating stroke patients long-term.

“Research has shown that hospitals adhering to clinical measures through (its guidelines) can often see fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates,” he said. “We are pleased to recognize PeaceHealth Southwest for their commitment to stroke care.”

PeaceHealth Southwest will be given two awards for its care at 3 p.m. Wednesday at 400 N.E. Mother Joseph Place. The event is open to the public.
