Fishing report, May 23

Angling for summer steelhead and spring Chinook jacks is open between Tongue Point and the I-5 Bridge on the Columbia River.

Angling for shad is open from Buoy 10 upstream to Bonneville Dam.

White sturgeon retention is open from Buoy 10 upstream to Wauna powerlines on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays during May 14 through June 4.

White sturgeon retention is closed from Wauna powerlines upstream to McNary Dam but remains an option for catch and released fishing. Anglers are reminded that spawning sanctuaries are in effect.

The McNary Pool is open to the retention of legal white sturgeon through July 31.

Walleye angling is good in The Dalles and John Day pools.

Trout continues to be good in Southwest Washington lowland lakes

Salmon, Steelhead and shad

Gorge Bank — 45 shad kept for four bank anglers.

Portland to Westport Bank — Six steelhead kept, plus four adult spring Chinook and three steelhead released for 67 bank anglers.

Goble to Beaver (Clatskanie) Boats — One steelhead kept for one boat (two anglers).

Cowlitz River — From the I-5 Bridge downstream: 330 bank rods kept five adult spring Chinook and two steelhead and released one adult spring Chinook and four steelhead. Eighty-eight boat rods kept six adult spring Chinook and one steelhead. Above the I-5 Bridge: 131 bank rods kept 15 adult and one jack spring Chinook and three steelhead and released one steelhead. Fifty-five boat rods kept one adult and one jack spring Chinook and released one adult spring Chinook.

Kalama River — 79 bank anglers kept 2 adult spring Chinook and 2 steelhead. 51 boat anglers kept 10 adult spring Chinook.

Mainstem Lewis River — eight bank and four boat rods had no catch. Closed to fishing for Chinook.

North Fork Lewis River — 13 bank rods had no catch. 3 boat rods released 2 steelhead. Closed to fishing for Chinook.

Wind River — 13 bank rods had no catch. 485 boat rods kept 120 adult and one jack spring Chinook and released 11 adult spring Chinook.

Drano Lake — 41 bank rods kept seven adult spring Chinook. 426 boat rods kept 146 adult spring Chinook and released five adult spring Chinook.

Klickitat River — 12 bank anglers kept three steelhead.

Sturgeon

Buoy 10 to Wauna Powerlines — Weekend checking showed 30 legal white sturgeon kept, plus 47 sublegal and 43 oversize sturgeon released for 151 boats (495 anglers).

Bonneville Pool (Bonneville Dam upstream to The Dalles Dam) — Closed for retention. Weekly checking showed two sublegal and five legal white sturgeon released for four bank anglers.

The Dalles Pool (The Dalles Dam upstream to John Day Dam) — Closed for retention. Weekly checking showed 41 sublegal and one oversize sturgeon released for two boats (six anglers).

John Day Pool (John Day Dam upstream to McNary Dam) — Closed for retention. No report.

Walleye

The Dalles Pool — 75 walleye kept, plus eight walleye released for 16 boats (37 anglers).

John Day Pool — 56 walleye kept, plus four walleye released for 17 boats (39 anglers).
