Letter: Stand up against Oregon tolls

By Sonia Courtney, Vancouver

Without a proper tolling plan that ensures Washington residents will not suffer financially for years to come, Washingtonians must pay close attention to the steps being made to make these plans a reality.

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’ve seen how tolls and the ever-rising costs to commute have affected the working class of the Bay Area financially, how the tolls also cut into family time because of the traffic they cause, especially during rush hour, and how they don’t relieve congestion.

If we allow tolls on Interstate 5 and Interstate 205, Washingtonians are also allowing what Oregon may say is inevitable: the rise in the cost to commute. Because one can be sure that if these toll plans become reality and they do not protect Washingtonians, what may start at $4 round-trip can easily go up to what they would see fit. Our state representatives must stand up for our state and for its residents. Our governor must be as involved as possible.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
