Letter: Thanks to school psychologists

Gov. Jay Inslee has recognized Nov. 12-16 as School Psychology Awareness Week. This is a week that is celebrated nationally as an opportunity to reach out to our communities and talk about what we, as school psychologists, do.

School psychologists are members of school staff who support students’ ability to learn and teachers’ ability to teach. School psychologists apply expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. By providing direct support and interventions to students, such as individualized learning and behavioral assessments to identify students’ strengths and needs, academic and behavioral interventions, counseling, and social skills training, school psychologists are an integral part of our children’s success. We consult with teachers, families, and other educators to improve support strategies and schoolwide practices.

We appreciate the support Washington residents give to our public schools and to our diverse student population. School psychologists are hard at work advocating for the needs of our students in Clark County, Washington, and nationwide.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
