Letter: Work to end global slavery

Most people may know that slavery exists, but maybe don’t know how bad it is. Slavery is illegal mostly everywhere, but it happens everywhere. Some forms of modern slavery are: forced labor, forcing others to do yard work, house work, etc.; sex trafficking; forcing others to do sexual acts they don’t want to; child marriage, where young girls are forced to marry an older man and they have to cook and clean.

Currently, 3 million children are slaves, according to antislavery.org, with the highest numbers in India and Central Africa.

One way that slavery can be passed down is when a family member has a debt they have to work off and, if they die, their family has to work it off, as slaves.

Slaves usually come from lower class or are vulnerable. Sometimes they get tricked, with promises of high pay and a place to sleep.

It doesn’t matter your age, gender, race or class in society; anyone can be put into some form of slavery.

People need to know about this problem because no one deserves to treated like that.
