The brother of a man accused in a Christmas Eve burglary and arson in Hockinson last year was sentenced Wednesday to a month in jail for trying to help his sibling evade arrest.

Michael Anthony Roland, 33, was sentenced to 30 days on a charge of second-degree possession of stolen property, Senior Deputy Prosecutor James Smith said in an email. Roland received a suspended 89-day sentence on a charge of second-degree rendering criminal assistance. He received credit for a single day in jail, Smith said.

Roland was originally charged in January with first-degree rendering criminal assistance. He pleaded guilty to amended charges in October.

Nearly a year ago, his brother, Joshua Adam Roland, 30, and Daniel L. Cronin, 36, allegedly broke into and set fire to a Hockinson house in the 17000 block of Northeast 119th Street. Joshua Roland cut his thumb inside and was bleeding profusely, according to probable cause affidavits.

The men started the fire to cover up the blood evidence, the affidavits say.

Michael Roland provided Joshua Roland with his identification and money to help him evade arrest. The added charge of possession of stolen property says Michael Roland received, retained, concealed or disposed of items he knew were stolen.

The cases against Cronin and the younger Roland are still pending. Their trials are currently set for Monday and Jan. 14, 2019, respectively.
