Letter: Oil production has drawbacks

By Matthew Allen Puhl, Vancouver

I read the Associated Press article “U.S. may again be world’s top oil producer” (Sept. 13, The Columbian) and was intrigued, as I am an advocate in keeping our oceans safe. As a fisherman on the Oregon Coast and a beachgoer, I want to see our coastline safe. The article points out some disturbing facts with the fracking affecting Texas and New Mexico.

If the U.S. indeed is going to surpass the production of oil in Russia and other countries, then our oceans are doomed. Also, fracking affects not only our soil, but our clean water for drinking.

Politicians should step up and make a stand against this process. I know how the process is for making a point, when working with the government, and how long it can take for an answer. We need a cleaner method of producing oil, or should eliminate production completely. Where is Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler in this matter? Let’s make it right — for our future and for our oceans.
