An unloaded handgun was seized by police from a 10-year-old Salem, Ore., elementary school student who brought the firearm in a backpack to school Wednesday, authorities say.
Marion County deputies responded to Four Corners Elementary School around 1 p.m. after other students saw the gun, notified school staff and they found it in the 10-year-old’s bag, according to Lt. Chris Baldridge, a sheriff’s office spokesman.
The student who brought the gun wasn’t taken into police custody and the student’s parents were notified, Baldridge said. He said he would not release any information on the student’s gender or why the student took the firearm to school.
The case has been referred to the county juvenile department.
