Vancouver

Art galleries and local business celebrate this month’s art shows with a First Friday Art Walk in downtown Vancouver from 5 to 9 p.m., when visitors can meet featured artists, enjoy late shopping and live music, and check out new restaurants. Camas

First Friday in Camas runs 5 to 8 p.m. with art galleries offering artist receptions, after-hours shopping, and themed, family-friendly activities in downtown businesses. October’s First Friday theme is “Pumpkin Pageant and Disney Costume Contest.” For more details, see the go: friday page.

OPENING EXHIBITS

Contemporary Art by Richard D. York, 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 5. Visual artist Richard D. York, Cherokee Nation citizen and council member of Mt. Hood Cherokees, will be available during this reception to speak with guests about his work, which will be for sale during this one-night exhibit. In addition to showing work in gallery and studio exhibits, York has also been featured on the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Emerging Artists website. His work has been selected for publication in Studio Visit Magazine, ARTE FUSE, and American Artwork 2018 Edition. Currently his work is held in private collections nationally. While incorporating elements that reflect his Cherokee heritage, culture and ancestors, York’s mixed media and acrylic works represent cultural intersections with contemporary life. “The Impossible Thing: Yupo Watercolor Art by Erin Dengerink and Tamra Sheline,” through Oct. 27, with an opening night reception from 5 to 9 p.m. on First Friday, Oct. 5. Dengerink and Sheline present this exhibit of “impossible” watercolor art on water-resistant Yupo paper. The nature of the nonabsorbent paper allows for watercolor works that are especially luminous and freewheeling. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 21, the artists will conduct a joint workshop for those who would like to learn the art of painting on Yupo. Sheline will demonstrate how to paint an autumn still life and Dengerink will cover painting figures and portraits. The cost of the workshop is $60 per person; RSVP to save your spot by emailing dengerinkart@gmail.com. Both events take place at Angst Gallery, 1015 Main St., Vancouver. Gallery hours are noon to 4, Wednesdays through Fridays, and by appointment on Saturdays. Enter through Niche Wine Bar, 1013 Main St., after 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. “Politiks: The Art of Deception,” through Oct. 31. Many artists will be present to discuss their work. Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Art at the C.A.V.E. 108 E.
