A waterfront development by any other name would be — an improvement!
As a downtown fan, I am thrilled to read about the big, shiny new development rising on the old Boise Cascade site fronting the Columbia. It’s a great mix of residential, retail and recreation. The cantilevered pier is sure to be an iconic attraction.
There’s just one thing wrong: the name. Sorry, but “The Waterfront Vancouver” is as catchy as “Westfield Shoppingtown.” Just doesn’t trip off the tongue. No one’s going to say, “Hey, let’s go down to The Waterfront Vancouver for dinner.” Say it out loud; see what I mean?
What we need, dear readers, are clever suggestions from you. I know there’s a lot of brainpower out there.
We already have SOHO in New York and SODO in Seattle and even BODO in Boise. Catchy, easy, snappy. Could be a CODO (Columbia Downtown) or a WAVA (Waterfront Vancouver), but this bright new addition to our community deserves a better moniker.
I have faith you will come up with a bunch of suggestions, even some serious ones. And if we don’t? Well, we can always go down to “that new place by the river” and have a drink.
