Prep tennis roundup: Columbia River wins 2A district title

The Columbia River boys tennis team finsihed with three placers and a team title Friday on the final day of the 2A district tournament at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver.

Nate Kessi and Wilson Keller finished second in doubles, Max Firstenburg and Alex Miller were fourth in doubles, and Matt Rudi was fourth in singles.

The Chieftains finished with 23 points, well ahead of Centralia’s 12 points. Mark Morris was third with 10.

Kessi and Keller lost in the doubles final to Ben Haukaas and Gabe Slind of Mark Morris 6-1, 7-6, and then won their second-place match over Ethan Chung and Brady Anderson of R.A. Long 6-2, 6-1.

Firstenburg and Miller lost in the third-place match, and then won fourth place over Colin Slattery and Caleb Walters of W.F. West 6-4, 0-6, 6-2.

Ridgefield’s Derek Kropp placed third by defeating Rudi 6-2, 6-2. Rudi then beat Ben Corwin of Centralia 6-2, 6-4 for fourth place.

4A DISTRICT — The top four singles seeds reached the semifinals without dropping a set in the tournament also being played at Club Green Meadows.

Skyview junior Jonathan Hutley, the top seed, will face Camas freshman Sunny Wang in one semifinal, while No. 2 Rylan Marshall, a Camas senior, takes on Union junior Naman Thawani. Those matches are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday with the championship at 1 p.m.

The doubles final is set for noon with No. 1 seed Kyle Mosier and Jacob Flentke facing No. 3 seed Akash Prasad and Jacob Gianan of Camas.

The top three placers in singles and doubles advance to bi-district next week.

3A DISTRICT — Mountain View has a singles player and two doubles teams into the semifinals at Vancouver Tennis Center.

Lu Abuizzah of Mountain View advanced to the semifinals at Vancouver Tennis Center where he will face Hudson’s Bay exchange student Manny Fernandez. The other semifinal features top seed Elijah Nelson of Prairie against Sam Crawford of Fort Vancouver.

Vincent Hsu and James Bertheau reached the doubles semifinals, along with teammates Kestutis Zalyps and Holden Henderson. Hsu and Bertheau play Trevor Stowell and Ben Betts of Evergreen. Zalyps and Henderson take on Cole Harmon and Ethan Hefflin of Prairie.

Matches begin Saturday at 8 a.m.

The top four placers in singles and doubles advance to bi-district next week.
