Letter: Let media do its job

By Claire Johnston, Vancouver

I don’t want to see any more martyrs. Three journalists have been killed in Europe this year, and Jamal Khashoggi, another journalist, was brutally murdered recently. Some think the press is their enemy, especially when the press reports on them in a less-than-flattering way; they try to silence journalists who hold a mirror up to those people’s excesses, greed and corruption.

I would rather that the press be allowed to do its muckraking best, no holds barred, without fear of reprisal or mortal danger. That they do not have to become martyrs to make us, the public, work towards the common good for all.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
