Emma Jenkins had a stellar debut for the Washington State cross country team, winning her first race and setting a freshman course record.

Jenkins, a Camas High graduate, won the WSU Alumni Meet on Friday at Colfax Golf Club. She covered the 4,000-meter course in 13 minutes, 49.5 seconds, shaving nearly 26 seconds off the freshman record set last year by Kiyena Beatty.

Jenkins finished three seconds ahead of second-place Devon Bortfeld, who was a senior captain for WSU last year.

WSU’s next race is the Cougar Classic on Sept. 14, also at Colfax Golf Club.

Jenkins starred all four years at Camas, finishing in the top seven four times at the WIAA state meet. She was a two-time district champion and Columbian All-Region girls cross country runner of the year as a senior.
