State unveils tentative razor clam schedule

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced a tentative schedule for the fall razor clam season.

The Olympian reported that the season is slated to begin in early October. Officials said final approval of the schedule depends on the results of marine toxin tests that usually occur about a week before the season is scheduled to open.

The tentative schedule sets Oct. 11 as the opening day. The fall season will go until Dec. 23.

The agency estimates the total razor clam population on most Washington’s beaches has increased significantly from last season, based on beach surveys conducted this summer.

The lone exception is Long Beach, an area that is recovering after a decline in clam survival due to low salinity in 2017.

Hiker’s car found by ranger station

Authorities say they’ve found the car of a missing hiker near a Mount Hood ranger station.

KATU-TV reported that Diana Bober, 55, of Gresham, Ore., has been missing since Aug. 29. She’s described as an avid hiker.

Deputies said her car was discovered near the Zigzag Ranger Station on Saturday, and search and rescue teams with trained dogs were out looking for her on Sunday.

Authorities are also hoping to identify two hikers who dropped off a backpack at the ranger station on Aug. 30. They say they now believe the backpack is Bober’s, and they’re hoping the hikers who found it will get in touch and let them know where they found it, to give searchers a better indication of her last known location.

The Statesman Journal reported Monday that the flight was the 16th flight by an organization called Fetch Fido a Flight, which flies animals from those shelters in Oklahoma to Oregon no-kill shelters.

The 108 dogs and 17 cats arrived in Salem over the weekend and will be housed at SafeHaven Humane Society south of Albany.

The organization says the animals will soon be up for adoption.

3 officers who fatally shot man identified

Authorities have released the names of three officers who shot and killed a man they say had a knife in a grocery store parking lot in Cheney.

The Cheney Police Department said Monday that officers Zebulon Campbell and Nicole Burbridge and Reserve Officer Nicholas Horn fired their weapons at the man Sept. 3.

Police said the officers responded, along with Eastern Washington University police, to a report of a disorderly man at Mitchell’s Harvest Foods at about 11:40 p.m. Investigators said the man failed to follow commands and moved toward the officers.

Police provided treatment but the man was pronounced dead. No one else was injured.

KXLY-TV reported the man was identified as Steve L. Anderson, 40.

The shooting is under review and the officers have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
