EVERETT  — The parents of a Washington man convicted of killing his former neighbors have been sentenced to 10 days in jail for helping their son flee the country.

Clyde Reed, 83, and Faye Reed, 79, were sent to jail Tuesday after pleading guilty in July to misdemeanor charges of obstructing law enforcement, the Daily Herald reported .

They also received a suspended jail sentence of 354 days.

The couple gave their son John Reed a getaway car and cash after he killed Monique Patenaude and Patrick Shunn in April 2016 over a land dispute, authorities said. John Reed, who is currently serving a life sentence, hid their bodies in the woods northeast of Seattle before fleeing to Mexico.

Faye Reed declined to speak at the hearing. Clyde Reed said he didn’t know what was going on when his son needed money.

The couple was initially charged with felony rendering criminal assistance, but prosecutors and defense attorneys had agreed to recommend no jail time for the parents citing their ages and health challenges, among other factors.

Superior Court Judge Bruce Weiss argued Tuesday that the victims’ family and friends deserved to see the pair behind bars and implied that letting them get off just because they are older would send the wrong message.

John Reed’s brother, Tony, is also serving jail time for helping his brother hide the bodies.

Tony Reed turned himself in and led detectives to where the couple was buried. He was sentenced to 14 months in jail after pleading guilty to rendering criminal assistance.

Patrick Shunn’s uncle, who shares his name, called the Reeds “one ugly regrettable family.”

“As far as I’m concerned, your honor, all of them should rot in hell,” he said.
