Letter: Think harder when you vote

Talk about pigeons coming home to roost. Particularly naive pigeons, in this case. I refer to the Associated Press article about the Environmental Protection Agency dragging its feet in regulating toxic chemicals in drinking water (“Congress to EPA: Regulate unsafe chemicals more quickly,” Sept. 7, The Columbian).

During the 2016 campaign, I watched videos of stadiums packed with thousands of people cheering themselves hoarse when President Donald Trump promised to “undo regulations.” I marveled that not one of those true believers thought to ask, “Uh, excuse me, just which regulations will you undo?”

Once in office, Trump not only undid a myriad of regulations that had been put in place by prior administrations in order to protect the environment, he packed the EPA with people with strong ties to industries.

Trump told us during the campaign that he was going to ruin the environment. Michigan and North Carolina, mentioned in this article, obviously weren’t listening. Both states voted for him.

Large corporations are doing well. Of course they react positively to lower pollution-control expense. But is the trade-off worth it?

If you were one of the thousands who thought that Trump wouldn’t allow your city to become toxically fouled, do America a solid; think harder when you vote.
