PORTLAND — Two Portland men were sentenced to prison for their roles in what authorities believe was a gang-related shooting in 2001.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports Luis Felipe Gonzalez was sentenced to 14 years in prison Wednesday, while Ramon Manuel Gonzalez was sentenced to 17 years last week.

Both men pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the cold-case killing of Pedro Francisco Valenzuela, during separate hearings in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

The two men opened fire on a minivan and fatally wounded the 19-year-old Valenzuela.

It’s unclear why the defendants targeted Valenzuela, but police think the men all had gang ties.

Although they share the same last name, Ramon and Luis Gonzalez aren’t related.

The defendants were charged in 2015 after Luis Gonzalez came forward with information about the shooting after being held in custody in another state in another case.
