College Notebook: Ries racking up goals for resurgent Portland soccer

Taryn Ries is on quite a roll.

The University of Portland sophomore can’t seem to stop scoring goals. Friday, the Ridgefield High grad scored the game-winner in the 68th minute of a 1-0 win over North Dakota.

It was the fifth consecutive match Ries has scored in. Her six goals in 11 matches are tops on the team for Portland (7-4-0).

Ries has been the go-to player in Portland’s attack. She leads the team in shots (31), shots on goal (14) and game winners (3).

Also playing a big role in Portland’s success is Columbia River grad Ellie Walker. The sophomore defender has started 10 of 11 matches, anchoring a defense that has four shutouts in the past five matches.

Under first-year coach Michelle French, Portland already has more wins than last season (5-13-1). The Pilots begin West Coast Conference play Thursday at San Diego.

Women’s Soccer

Sydnee Smith, a senior from Skyview, has started all eight matches at defender for Seattle Pacific (6-1-1). The Falcons are outscoring opponents 14-2, including a 4-0 win over Saint Martin’s on Thursday and a 2-0 win over Central Washington Saturday, in which Smith had an assist.

Alyssa Tomasini, a sophomore from Camas, scored in the 90th minute of Western Oregon’s 1-0 win over Montana State-Billings on Thursday.

Kaili Brundage, a junior from Prairie, had an assist in Western Oregon’s 1-0 win over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday.

Men’s Soccer

Mitchell Pinney, a senior from Hockinson, scored both goals in Southern Oregon’s 2-0 win over Eastern Oregon on Friday, then added another in a 10-0 win over Walla Walla on Sunday. The Raiders (7-2) have won seven straight, a school record. Pinney was named Cascade Conference offensive player of the week.

Jake Kempf, a senior from Camas, scored his first goal of the season in Gonzaga’s 2-1 win over Sacramento State on Thursday.

Grant Alcorn, a senior from Union, made three saves as Concordia opened Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a 2-1 win over Seattle Pacific on Saturday.

Ben Stevenson, a senior from Prairie, made five saves in The Evergreen State College’s 2-1 win over Warner Pacific on Friday. He has started all seven matches for the Geoducks (4-2-1), with a goals-against average of 0.97.

Josh Schneider, a freshman from Camas, scored the opening goal in Willamette’s 2-1 win over George Fox on Friday. The Bearcats are 4-0 in Northwest Conference play.

Max Billsborough, a sophomore from Camas, helped University of the Pacific’s defense shut out defending national champ Stanford in a 1-0 win Friday. The Tigers won despite being outshot 13-5.

Volleyball

Zoe McBride, a freshman from Prairie, had a combined 15 kills and 18 digs in Morgan State’s wins over North Carolina A&T and South Carolina State last weekend.

Brooke Van Sickle, a redshirt sophomore from Battle Ground, had eight kills and 11 digs in Oregon’s five-set win over Washington State on Sunday. Thursday, she tied her season-high with 14 digs in a four-set win over Oregon State.

Olivia Coale, a senior from Skyview, had a season-high 10 digs in Washington State’s five-set loss to Oregon on Sunday.

Madison Pfaff, a freshman from Camas, had 27 digs over two matches for Corban last week, including a four-set win over No. 12 ranked College of Idaho on Friday.

Ashley Watkins, a junior from Battle Ground, had a combined 95 assists and 10 digs as Montana opened Big Sky play with wins over Sacramento State and Portland State last week.

Evi Wilson, a junior from Columbia River, had 19 kills in Montana State’s five-set win over Portland State on Thursday.

Cross Country

Said Guermali, a redshirt junior from Camas, placed 15th at the Dellinger Invite Friday in Eugene, Ore., helping Portland win the team title over host Oregon. He covered the 8,000 meter course in 25:28.

Dustin Zimmerly, a sophomore from Camas, placed 14th at the Eastern Oregon Invitational, helping the host Mountaineers place third. He covered 8,000 meters in 27:45.
