Joann Derie is right that it is time we address the lack of affordable housing in our state and country (Our Readers’ Views, April 12). In fact, the National Low Income Housing Coalition reports that “no state has an adequate supply of homes for its poorest renters,” and says Washington has housing for only 29 of 100 in this category.
With an initiative in Congress to increase the budget for the Housing Choice Vouchers program (Section 8), it is a good time to call or write those who represent you in Congress. This increase will help over 300,000 qualified families receive vouchers and keep up with rising costs in the program. (Currently, only 25 percent of those who qualify for this program receive vouchers.)
So speak up, and help turn this American tragedy around.
