Letter: Biden should end candidacy

I was seriously disappointed when Joe Biden decided to run for president. Mr. Biden has always tried to do good, and his 36-year record as United States senator is fairly impressive. But his eight-year record as vice president is less so. It earned only muted praise from Barack Obama when the former president suggested that Joe was like the assist-man on a basketball team.

All 76-year-old Mr. Biden brings to the crowded field of Democratic candidates is name recognition. Unfortunately, that might be enough to get him nominated. If so, he would have to confront the quick-on-his-feet Donald J. Trump, who would doubtless continue to describe Biden as Sleepy Joe. And Joe might well come across that way in televised debates.

There is surely nothing more important than ensuring that our feckless, uninformed, bombastic, dishonest and embarrassing president does not serve a second term. This requires a Democratic candidate who appeals to an electorate in the 30-to-60 age range with liberal but not extreme views concerning the role of government. Joe Biden has a good record in many respects but I do not believe he is electable. He should end his candidacy.
