Letter: Herrera Beutler should speak up

We’re glad to hear Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler plans to write a firm letter to President Trump. That should really make him change his ways. But in addition to questioning the president’s language in challenging four of her colleagues — four women of color, like her — Herrera Beutler should take the opportunity to raise a few additional questions for Trump to answer:

Do you plan to actually address the federal budget deficit you’ve helped to explode, or will that just be something for your successor to deal with?

Is there any kind of strategy behind all the saber-rattling and tense uncertainty in the Middle East (or in the rest of the world)?

Can we finally take serious action to blunt Russia’s and other adversaries’ actions to undermine America’s elections?

Will you apologize to Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland for calling his district “rat- and rodent-infested”?

Herrera Beutler could pose other important questions in her letter, but Trump will probably have lost interest before reaching the end of this list. She should consider copying Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell with her letter, because he reportedly actually reads. Finally, she should copy all of us in Southwest Washington, too. She represents us, after all.
